Dear friends: My thanks to all of you who called my attention to the Power Savings feature in KDE's Control Center, PowerControl section. That was the culprit. I unchecked the power display and now KDE's screensaver works perfectly just as it used to in the past. I also, however, uninstalled xscreensaver to avoid a conflict with KDE's screensaver. You need xscreensaver ONLY if you use the xfce desktop environment.
