My problem applies to the virtual consoles that you get with Ctl-Alt-F2, Ctl-Alt-F3,
etc., not to X terminals.   The virtual consoles take you out of X entirely (you get
back in with Ctl-Alt-F7  for the default 0 server or Ctl-Alt-F8 for server 1).   Try it!
