If you just want to compress music and don't care about the format, you 
should use Ogg Vorbis ( www.vorbis.com).
This is not mp3, it's better, it's free and open.
There's a commandline encoder called oggenc, very easy to use.
You can play back Ogg Vorbis files with most GUI players.
