Subject:    kdesktop and kcontrol broken (noxim and RENDER)

I don't know what's happened, but both kdesktop and kcontrol are broken.

$ kdesktop
kdesktop: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/kdesktop.so: 
undefined symbol: noxim                                                       

$ kcontrol
Xlib:  extension "RENDER" missing on display ":0.0".                          

Both of these apps worked before. I have no idea what's happened to them.

Help please!
