I have a partial solution ......
Turns out that CUPS has a bug that causes the device detection
routines to fail (time out ?). Anyway, the newest version (1.1.6)
fixes this and I do indeed see all the ports listed when I try to add
a printer. The solution is partial at this point because I could not
install the newer version (using deb packages) without first deleting
some other stuff including the gimp-print drivers. I tried reloading
these after installing the new CUPS but got errors.
I think it's a matter of removing a whole bunch of stuff, cleaning out
the system so to speak, and re-installing.
In any case, thinks are looking up and I am most grateful for your
assistance.
