Make sure that your sound driver is installed. Do an
  $ lsmod
to see if soundcore module is loaded.

I have a Via onboard soundchip VT82C686A
It seems to be installed. i checked all confuguration menu's, but there is
no sound. ( sometimes a beep :))
I think there might be a problem because i installed only the first disk of
mandrake linux 7.2.
If you like to help me i can make some screenshots
