I really don't think video card speed or color depth / resolution is an issue
- at least not in start up. It might be an issue later on when you do things
like move windows around and so forth. That being said, I don't notice too
many slowdowns that I can readily attribute to a (slow, by today's standards)
video card. The first is the background pic - there is a noticeable hiccup
when in the middle of displaying it. The other is a short noticeable delay
when putting up the desktop and icons - one can see the screen blank a few
times when the panel comes up and is then resized and the desktop with icons
comes up as part of the system startup.
But these two events don't really impinge on the total startup time of KDE,
which with all the complicated setup etc., is going to take a while to start,
especially on a system with not a lot of horsepower and/or memory. The
original poster says 192 megs, which shouldn't be a problem. FWIW, 192 megs
is about what my system shows as 'shared' when kde2 is fully loaded up with
konqueror and a console. That's not totally significant, just a data point.
