forever in 1.x kmenuedit occasionally simply gets a little flaky. 
when it does, just start it in a terminal window:

$ kmenuedit &

or from the minicli -- alt f2, then kmenuedit. (i've never done this, 
but i've done it from a terminal window a lot.)

As to the security of Unix, just consider this:
