Another possibility is to try out fetchmail
http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/fetchmail/

You can use it in conjunction with KMail. It can be used to retrieve mail in
the background, at specified intervals. It is robust and shouldn't be confused
by server errors.

You can use fetchmail to retrieve your email from a pop server to a local
account and then set KMail up to use a local rather than pop3 account. I did
this for several months, it worked fine. (Now I use a developmental version of
KMail that that supports background downloading and when checking in the
background it doesn't pop up error dialogs).

(I guessing reg uses a pop3 account but this seems logical).
