I agree that it's pretty easy to get truetype fonts working--
at least with my RedHat 6.1 distro. The one tricky thing I found
was specifying the default truetype fonts directory. xfstt 
creates a startup script called /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfstt (for
RH6.1). The default environment variables are 
XFSTT=/usr/X11R6/bin/xfstt
TTFONTS=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttfonts

I changed TTFONTS to point to my Windows partition's fonts 
directory:
TTFONTS=/mnt/win/windows/fonts
This worked great, giving me access to truetype fonts in Windows
and Linux without making a copy of them.
