well, thanks, i guess.<g> and you're right -- so now i'm trying to 
remember the one extremely simple setting in ~/ that needs to be 
changed when this happens, because i've seen it and have gone through 
the usual /etc suspects, and it turned out to be something extremely 
minor, either one dinky thing in netscape or in kppp or someplace. i 
don't think it's the resolve hostname  thing from kppp, though.
