It would be pretty easy to preconvert (or postconvert) the file -- or even
if the file is mounted on a DOS volume, have the filesystem do the required
translation (assuming that is possible, I'm not quite sure, but I suspect
so. Many tools, of course exist to do this -- sed, or tr, or fromdos/todos
and so forth.

A purist would say that Unix does not distinguish between "text" and "binary"
files as such, and of course "text" files have simply \n as a line separator.
