Not sure why this doesn't work, but under Solaris 2.6 (on a Sparc20) I
simply changed .xinitrc to run startkde and then choose "Openwin" from
the session menu in the login screen. I have no .xsession file at all.
This is assuming your setup uses a graphical login screen, not simple
console mode.

If you can compile KDE from scratch, you should be able to compile the
screensaver statically linked (I haven't tried, so I don't know how,
sorry). The ".a" files are libraries which get statically linked whereas
".so" are dynamic libraries. The resulting binary will be bigger,
though, as the library gets compiled in.

One possible solution would be to install ncurses and have kvt link
against ncurses instead of curses. That's what I did:

dsun178:speyes-1.2.0 39> ldd `which kvt`
        libncurses.so.4 =>       /cad/opt2/lib/libncurses.so.4
	[...]
