A few more bits of information that may help someone help me (and, believe me,
I'm looking every place I can think of to try to solve this myself):

(1) I just logged out of KDE/XWindows. I got the messages "cannot open
/var/tmp/server-0.xkm" and "couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB
keymap"

(2) I then logged in as root and did a startx. As root in the KDE the
backspace key and delete keys worked as they should in kwrite. I didn't make
an exhaustive study, but that indicates that the settings for the superuser are
probably okay. So if I knew how to copy them to my personal settings
(hopefully without destroying other preferences, like what I have on my
desktop), I could move ahead...

Thanks for any help!!!
