 Hi John.

It's really important to not get 'distro' mixed up with 'package'. Building
your own package is insanely easy (well, relatively easy). Building an
entire distro can take years, and even then it might blow goats. (I'm not
 *just* talking about slackware...)

Most distro's appear to include packages that let you make rinky packages
of your own with little effort. This means that your system can maintain
its integrity, and also that files continue to be where you expect (and want)
 them to be.

One of the basic principles of the whole 'open souce' idea is freedom. That
is, my inherent freedom to put my files wherever I like. If someone can't
write software that can run from any arbitrary position, then they're not
 very good at writing software.

I use Debian. This distro doesn't cater at all for this /opt/ thingy. I
regularly grab new k-apps as tarballs, and am frequently thwarted by
the author's assumption I'm running redhat or something just as bad.
(Latest example -- kstocks, with a craftily hidden file containing lots
of hard-coded references to /opt stuff.)

 Cheers,
 Jedd.
