Don't apologize.  This problem has been a real head banger. Good thing it's not a
critical item.

I've tried the kscd app and a few others, but nary a peep

In settings -> sound -> system sounds the "enable system sounds" box is checked (first
thing I checked).  I know the sound card and speakers worked onc apon a time.  I was
using windozz --shudder-- about two months ago and they worked fine.
