The following is taken from the kde "installation instructions" maybe this will help.

4.13 startkde fails with "can not connect to X server". What is wrong?
You probably tried to start the X-Server with startkde. The X-Server is started with \
startx. startkde is the script that should be run in your .xinitrc or .xsession to \
activate the window manager and the necessary server daemons for KDE. See also: How \
do I start KDE?.

Subject: Unable to resolve symbol
I have installed a kde.tgz, qt_1_44.tgz and egcs.tgz packages from the \
Slackware.com site. Whenever i start kde or startkde, I get 'Unable to resolve \
symbol' messages, so I am being unable to start kde session. What could be the \
problem? Am I missing any packages? Could it be a mem problem? How could I solve \
these unable to resolve problems? Also, the xintrc for kde was cretaed, so in fact \
everything should be set.
truly,
Mauro Andrade
