Well, I dont use caldera, but I am the packager of the qt rpms for redhat.
So I have a pretty good idea of whats in these rpms
The rest is *NOT* ``newbie'' stuff:

> qt-devel-1.42-2.i386.rpm
   ^^^^^
  needed only if you compile kde or kde apps

> qt-doc-html-1.42-2.i386.rpm
   documents, not needed  (useful if you are writing qt-based apps)

> qt-examples-1.42-2.i386.rpm
   examples, useful if you are writing qt apps
> qt-opengl-1.42-2.i386.rpm
   extensionss for 3d Voodoo graphics card programs
  
> qt-tutorial-1.42-2.i386.rpm
   reaches you how to program with qt
