I just installed the newest release of KDE (ver 1.1) on my dell laptop, using
rpm's containing binaries from the norwegian kde ftp mirror nvg.unit.no:

ftp://ftp.nvg.unit.no/pub/linux/kde/stable/1.1/distribution/rpm/RedHat-5.2/i386/

I did not need any extra libraries to complete this installation, everything
that was needed was already installed with redhat 5.2.

I am by no means a long-time linux user. :-)

That is correct.

What particular library is the one that caused the trouble her ? I am curious.

Yes you did.

To really learn the stuff, I agree it is best to read for yourself. Get all
available documentation, and learn by doing. That's how I do it. The reason I
participate on mailing-lists like this, and read usenet news is usually because
I want to know what others are doing, what problems are most common etc. And
sometimes I might learn something too - that is an added bonus.

Since you are new to linux, you are probably not very familiar with rpm. I can
give you a couple of helpful hints.

If you issue a command like: 'rpm -qlp package-name.rpm', you will get a list
of all files in that rpm, and you will also see where they will be installed.
If you type 'rpm -qip package-name.rpm' on the command line, you'll get
information about that package.

There's a lot of more things you can do with rpm. Please read the manual page
('man rpm') to find out more.

Maybe... Installing KDE is really pretty straightforward, and I think the
instructions that comes with KDE are really good. But of course - someone will
always get some problems. :-D

Being a newbie in the linux world can be really frustrating in the beginning,
especially if you try to learn too much a once. ;-)
