If you'd like to avoid downloading them: Simply get mailer, which is
online-capable - this puts you in a position to delete them directly from
the server - thus u would be able to decrease your downloadtime a lot.

OFFTOPIC:

Wouldn't it be a nice idea to make kmail online-capable and even to
integrate a feature to directly delete messages of certain threads? You
could specify: "Delete messages of this thread online" - and you're done!
