first, if you then hit enter, chances are you'll get a login prompt and
be able to log in normally.

second, you've been -- as a friend described it when i did it --
"charging around upgrading libraries," right? and i'll bet that one of
the libraries you've upgraded is libg++. maybe gcc, too, right? maybe
in an effort to get stuff that flat refuses to compile to compile?
anyway, that's how i produced the error above. the solution here was to
reinstall the old stuff -- most kde stuff won't compile here anyway --
or to make symlinks so that applications looking for a specific library
could be tricked into using the newer version. the latter hasn't been
entirely successful -- no netscape plugins anymore, for reasons not
known to anyone i can find. are there any additional error messages
upon bootup, such as apps that are trying to start but can't find
libfoobar? in my experience there are, and these will tell you what
needs fixing.

it's part of the price of open software. in exchange for a multitude of
good things, we encounter the fact that it's unlikely that a developer
is using the same software that we are, and there's no way of testing
everything together for compatability. (example: koffice requires
qt-1.4.1, which is not, apparently, entirely happy with some other
stuff.)

when you figure out who the bad actor was, then it's a good idea to
drop a note to the appropriate developers, simply noting that in
such-and-such a configuration you got this error.
