You seem to have misunderstood something.  When you are dealing with
systems that are unix-like, you can never, ever refer to free memory.
ALL the memory your box has, will be used as a cache for your apps.  If
your start up X or any other app like netscape and then exit it, it
doesn't unload from Ram...it stays there so that next time you need to
start it up again it will load faster.  The system will only clear some
memory if you need to start a previously unexecuted app and there is no
free ram space.
