The color depth of your display -- 8-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit, etc.  If you
run in 8-bit color, you have a limited number of colors, and full-color
pictures need to be "dithered".  This results in them looking fuzzy.

If you're in 8-bit, then (presuming your video card can do better)
then you should increase to at least 16-bit (or as high as you can
go).  How you do this depends on what OS you're running.  With Solaris
x86, you run kdmconfig and set up all the parameters.  XFree86 will
be different, use xf86config or whatever other setup thingy is provided
by your vendor.
