Is it not perhaps that your modem is sending back that you have no dialtone ???
There are options to stopit from doing that .... can't remember what they are off the \
top of my head though ....

Subject: kppp problems
I am having problems getting kppp to even dial my phone. In the past I was \
using a simple dial-up script (/etc/ppp/ppp-on-dialier) and this works fine. In \
trying to use kppp I get the following response back from the modem which is a \
sportster and hayes compatible.
ATH0
OK
ATDT (the phone number - I hear a click - the speaker goes on but the number is \
never dialed and then I get) NO CARRIER
and the process stops
here is the ppp-on script which works (note we are using pap and I have gotten \
this to work too). I should mention this has to be run as root and I am using kppp as \
my login account.
exec /usr/sbin/pppd debug lock modem crtscts /dev/cua1 38400 \
noipdefault defaultroute \
name $ACCOUNT connect $DIALER_SCRIPT
Here is the chat script which is known to work
exec /usr/sbin/chat -v \
TIMEOUT 3 \
ABORT '\nBUSY\r' \
ABORT '\nNO ANSWER\r' \
ABORT '\nRINGING\r\n\r\nRINGING\r' \
'' \rAT \
'OK-+++\c-OK' ATH0 \
TIMEOUT 30 \
OK ATDT$TELEPHONE \
TIMEOUT 30 \
CONNECT ''
Could anyone tell me what the correct settings would be for my modem so as not to \
have this happen? I don't think it's a protection problem since the modem is \
writeable but perhaps I'm missing something. I would think at least I could get the \
phone dialed and then I need to deal with the ppp daemon. The kppp version is 1.3.3
thanks, Dan
