Here's what I found.

fvwm2, kfm, kvt -- 9 MB
fvwm2, kfm, kvt, NS 3.01 -- 12 MB

kwm, kfm, kvt -- 12 MB
kwm, kfm, kvt, NS 3.01 -- 15 MB.

fvwm2, kfm, kvt, kmail, kppp (so I can write this e-mail) -- 12 MB

These figures are from "free" and are reported less the "buffers". If I
include the "buffers" then all of these use about 30-35MB; I have 40 installed.

As I understand it, the "buffering" is linux being clever. My experience is
that, however much RAM I have installed on my system, linux manages to use a
lot of whatever's available for "buffering". Is it possible that the wide
variation in figures that are being reported are a result of differences in
counting "buffering"?
