Ok folks this thread of not being able to connect to the X server is
getting bad....

For those that do not have experience in Unix/Linux, and are PC or Mac
literate, at the command prompt, you do not just type 'startkde',
before you can do this X must be running. The best way for that to happen
is to type 'xinit' or 'startx'. And there is a flaw in this also, xinit
and startx are likely to start another window manager, such as fvwm,
fvwm2, afterstep or even mwm...

For xinit, create a ".xinitrc" file in your home directory, this is the
directory where the system puts you when you login. It should have the
follwoing lines in it:

KDEDIR=/opt/kde
PATH=/opt/kde/bin:$PATH
export KDEDIR PATH

if [ -x /opt/kde/bin/starkde ] then;
        exec startkde
fi

For those that use startx the same lines as above should in a file named
".xesssion", or ".Xsession" in you home directory.

Your mileage may differ if you are using another shell besides bash or sh.
You will need to look at the man pages for the shell you have choosen to
use if it is not bash or sh. In the C shell (csh) it is 'setenv'.

Hope this helps and cuts down on the bandwidth of the message 'cannot
connect to X server'

Cheers,

Bruce...
