Perhaps you are running a 256 color X-Server ( 8bpp ) ?
Try to run the X-Server with more than 256 colors.
You can modify the XF86Config file and add the entry
DefaultColorDepth <colordepth>
"DefaultColorDepth 16" for example runs the X-Server
with a colordepth of 16 = 65536 colors :)
