? The aim is to see nothing (I mean only "real" files). And it is 
benefit for both groups of users.

What for?

But backups would be internal thing for KDE, user should not even know 
(unless she/he would like to) that there is some backup mechanism. 
KDE should be simply more reliable -- and it is all user needs to 
know.

I think not -- consider such case:
* you run gwenview
* you change the contrast
* you saved the result
* one week later, you run krita
* you think the previous contrast was better
* undo, oops, where did the previous state go?

One central backup system is data-focused -- it answers the 
question "what happened with the file", tool is not important, you 
can undo the revert to previous state no matter tool you use (well, 
you have to use editor, because readers does not change anything by 
definition).
