In contrary to Windows, clicking in the textfield would not select all
text and thus destroy the clipboard the user wanted to paste. Thus the
simple answer to your question is; the textfield itself.
I don't know if eating esc in the textfield is a good idea, though. Many
applications use esc to interrupt a current action. Konqueror cancels a
download, for example. This will not be possible anymore if the focus is
in the textedit.
So, for consistency reasons, I don't think esc is an option to implement.
