Yes, this is a very valid question.

This is an unfortunate first reaction from developers.  I try to react 
with: 'tell me more' or 'tell me why your idea is good'.

Yes, I would tend to agree with you.  So, unless someone can come up 
with a good reason to have the current default, it would be better to 
have a URL icon for Home.
