Looking through the list of icons i have here (damn, there's a lot...) i
find an icon named actions/clear_left. This icon is the same as the icon used
to clear the location bar (cleverly called actions/locationbar_erase), only
mirrored/turned 180 degrees (depending on icon set). Why not try making it a
general trend to use this for clearing text fields? i'm going to refer to the
gestalt law of closeness here (the button would be closer to the text field,
and thus it would also mean it is associated closer to it), and in addition
to that the button will now be closer to where it exists in the filter bars
found around MacOS X, where the clear button is a small round hotspot inside
the text field itself (yes, i know, don't refer to existing stuff in other
systems, i am just drawing a parallel here ;) ).
