then these things would go into ~/.local as agreed upon by the projects. 
realize that the number of people who would actually read kopete logs in gaim 
or vice versa is vanishingly small. import/export tools are usually used for 
these things for this reason (not to mention to avoid concurrent access 
issues)

wtf would we make something like sendmail's config? no, each app would install 
a simple .desktop or XML file to a well known directory. each file would be 
named appropriately (e.g. /opt/kde3/share/apps/backup/kopete.xml) and would 
outline the back up needs for that one application according to a standard 
description syntax. the syntax would need to be well documented and be 
designed for clarity.
