this is out of respect for people's tendency to move in straight lines towards 
what they want to get to.

as an optional feature i personally don't really have any problems w/it as 
long as it is not the default and doesn't result in the horrification of a 
GUI config page somewhere =)

where would put the option? would it be a hidden option, or in the widget 
style dialog, or?
