Actually, he isn't expected to know it, that is why the information is
in parentheses.

I don't think that you need to understand the menus. You just need to
know the user name and/or the session type. OTOH, it is helpful to know
the VT number in case you want to use the keyboard to switch. Perhaps
it is also useful to know the X session number. Obviously you have to
know the VT number for "login" sessions to tell which is which.

The question is whether dumbing down UNIX is a good or bad idea. I say,

This is another suggestion that falls under the general idea of having a
beginner/advanced switch somewhere.

I also find that I have a session root: "TTY login (pts/4)". Since I
can NOT switch to this, it shouldn't be listed.
