ok then, what about the idea of a group card sort?  we obviously cant hit
every possible application, but if we have a large enough sample, we could
come up with guidlines how to better organize the menus.

a card sort can be done one of two ways. 1) the categories can be
suggested, where the participant groups items together and comes up with
suggestions of the categories themselves.  2) or the categories can be
predetermined and the participant organizes items in that manner.

mozdev has a crossplatform card sorting tool we can use:

i havnt personally used this before, but it is the best referenced cross
platform cardsort app.

so..
a) do people agree that a card sort would be a good start?
b) would card sort 1) or card sort 2) be best to perform?  it could be
interesting to see how every day users would categorize their apps

the data could also provide us insite to news ways of providing the kde
menus and give us ideas to experiment with non-hierarchy menus.
