According to your "logic", brake pedal should be lifted _up_ instead of
pushing down, because accelerator pedal is pushed _down_ to increase
speed :)) However somehow almost all people learn very quickly that
accelerator has to be pushed down to increase speed, and brake has to be
pushed down to decrease speed. Same movement with opposite result, eh?
Go write some petition about changing "confusing behaviour" of these two
pedals in every car... <no offence>

I don't believe these left-right arrow buttons are any obstacle to learn
KMail, specially after discovering that corporate Outlook has the same
functions on these same left-right arrow keys and nobody seems to worry about
that.

On the contrary, usage of arrow buttons in KMail is HUGE ADVANTAGE, very good,
successful design and should be presented as such. After few minutes of
learning almost everybody will agree, because it is really very easy to read
mail using KMail with these 4 buttons. KMail IS BETTER in that aspect. Let
us be proud about that! :-) Use this as "positive business discriminator"
against other mail systems.
