That is one of the reasons for "About this computer" menu item.
It would show OS/Desktop version, CPU speed, RAM size and usage.
Kinfocenter does all this, of course, but it probably has too much stuff
for non technical users (who don't know what a DMA channel is),
while not providing enough for expert users - these could use a more generic
/proc browser.

It also provides a nice way to do sophisticated "about" box for KDE 
itself...
