Okay, everyone's said how mozilla *isn't* the way to do it. Has anyone
thought of ways *to* do it that have already been implimented?

I draw your attention to the google toolbar

This toolbar bears some resemblance to the search bar already in
Konqueror (with the drop-down containing all your previous searches
for the session) except it has a few extra buttons.

Take a look at the second link to see the highlighter feature. You
click it to turn it on and click it again to turn it off. This takes
up the space of probably 10 pixels square so it won't need another row
of toolbars.

Problem solved.

(note: I've not used it in ages so I logged onto my win2000 machine
and tested it out. It seems the google highlighting thing isn't
incramental(sp? Sorry, I'm on windows and it doesn't check my
spelling) but I think the initial user interface is there and it works
quite well. If anyone wants to try it out for themselves, try fiddling
with the options. There are some optional buttons which let you
"search next" on each word individually and aren't in there by
default. These buttons are the one thing which are sorely missed by me
on Linux but on balance, if the highlight function were incrimental
then I wouldn't need either. Maybe a little right arrow beside the
highlight icon would be a good use of another 10 pixels so you can
"find next" and jump to the next highlighted word)
