I beg to differ here:

the "regular find" (the find dialog) does not have incremental search, plus 
it gets in the way of the search (it occludes your view of the document).

The incremental search user interface is too primitive as it is.

I'd be perfectly fine with an incremental search interface only, provided 
that it had a better user interface. We could provide the usual preference 
option as to which interface to use, but...

Yes. Do you see any overlap of usage? If not, wouldn't it be better for the 
user which interface to use, just the way we ask if a tabbed interface is 
preferred in konqueror?

I don't care if "the other" interface is present. I just would not use it.

As long as the functionality has a common API, different implementations 
could be provided, and tailored to the user base.
