It is used to determine if there's available disk space in a folder for you to copy/move/create a file in it. Suppose you have a 524 MB file on folder A which you'd like to move to folder B, but you're not sure there's so much space available on the disk folder B resides. You can simply open the properties for folder B and see that information, instead of hunting for the device in with folder B is located.
