i have been working with mostly games and kedutainment.. but has anyone else \
encountered misuse/abuse of popup windows during the use of the application? (NOT \
dialogs and not configuraton menus) is there a section in thie HIG which addresses \
rules/suggestions as to when it is appropriate to use and not to use a popup window? \
if not, this thread is being started so we can discuss this issue and i will write up \
our conclusions and submit them as suggestions to the hig.

here are some random thoughts and questions about popup windows ive had so far:

what are popup windows? popup windows are NOT dialogs. popup windows are not new \
documents created by the application according to the SDI rules. there are two types \
of popup windows, the type which appears during use of the application and the type \
which appears during configuration of the application. popup windows which appear \
during the use of the application should contain information, but does not require \
action upon that document. when is it appropriate to have information displayed in a \
popup window and when should information be displayed in the document.

bad examples of popup windows during use of application:
a popup window in which the document little or no information (it appears for bells \
and whistles). a popup window with custom graphics and buttons to replace a dialog

good examples of popup windows during use of application:
the info bulletins openoffice displays when you trigger a feature such as \
auto-spell-check on-start help and info windows

now that i think of it, do configuration popup windows have a different name other \
than "popup window" or "configuration dialog"?

these are all rough ideas in order to spur a debate..

Good luck,
