The problem with animations are that they are very nice on the first use, but 
usually get annoying when you have become accustomed to the environment, and 
simply want actions to happen fast.

So the 3d and conventional desktops are not mutually exclusive? This is good.

I propose that KDE takes advantage of those features that make sense (and have 
decent XServer support) but with keeping compatibility in mind.
