While not a great example of usability, amarok seems to do this kind of 
thing with it's playlist.

I'm not sure what the  technical consequences may be, but from the 
user's point of view the configurability is lost (considering Kate does 
the same kind of thing with it's sidebars, it probably won't take long 
till someone implements 'configure toolbar..' for these kind of things) 
- which doesn't have to be a problem depending on the functions such a 
toolbar would provide.
