Hi,
I just noticed a dutch review of SuSE Linux Professional 9.0 and so also KDE
in the E-TRENDS rubrique of the this week edtion of Trends, a
financial-economical magazine in Belgium. It's writen by Brune Leijnse and it
is online available (you need to pay for it) in their online archive (search
for "Is vrije software een aanrader?). ( http://www.trends.be ) Of course
it's about an older version of KDE. The author's (who use by hisself SuSE)
ideas related to the usability of KDE and Linux of the author are:
o old hardware gives problems
o you need to accustom yourself to the Linux file system hierarchy
o he has a problem with kmail and so he now use Mozilla for mail and surfing
o the installation of packages from the Net is more difficult than under
Windows he says
o "Another issue: it was years ago when I needed to set file associations
under Windows. Under KDE I do this more than I want to do."
o the much used format of Windows Media Player do not works under Linux he
says, and he finds this very annoying.
o KDE misses the consistent look and feel between the different applications.
He gives as example Acrobat Reader for Linux which has a bug and a
"prehistoric interface".
o he needs readable fonts like the ones of Bitstream and Agfa.
o "Linux on the desktop is possible"
o "Pro's: no virusses, more pricacy, no licence costs, every year more quality
and is reaching that of Windows"
o "Contra's: lower productivity because a lot of small shortcommings, home
users need to buy Windows by their computers what eliminate the cost
advantage, not enough hardware drivers for new hardware, needs more expertise
as Windows, unusful for who needs Windows Media Player, arrears in for new
applications"
