I don't think thats acceptable. How about this suggestion: 

a) the character that was entered last time is shown as "plain" character, and 
all other characters are '*'ed. 

b) whenever a new character is typed, the old visible one is hidden. 

c) after a timeout (lets say 2-3 seconds), the last typed character is also 
hidden. 

This way not the whole password is visible if anybody happens to get a view of 
the screen for a second, while it is still easy enough for you to follow if 
you typed the correct keys.
