I have been reading this thread, and IMO there is an easy and simple
solution (that i have meant to actually code for quite a while now :) which
is to simply show a passive popup next to the kmenu, right after startup,
describing what it is.

Could either have a button on it to disable it, or simply only show up the
first X times one starts kde.

IMO this is a much better solution than animated icons, an applet with an
arrow, or having the menu open by default.

PS: i tried to come up with a quick patch for this, but it isn't showing up
and i ran out of time.
