yes, this is basically what i was suggesting: allow PAM to do all the work and 
simply report on it's activities; whether that is best achieved by following 
system logs (which may or may not be on the local machine and may or may not 
be turned on) or by querying PAM directly is another matter. PAM does, AFAIK, 
offer hooks for programs to query the state of a user's login history using 
the tally module.

yes, it does.. there is already kwrited which handles console messages and 
puts them in a dialog .. e.g. try wall'ing a message, it's pretty nifty... i 
often use it when doing sys admin remotely on machines that are being used as 
desktops/workstations... extending this to system events would be a nice 
idea... 

traditional dialogs may be a bit invasive, but a ticker or passive popups 
would probably do the trick nicely...
