The thing is that first, the line makes the items much less readable, and second, due to the line much more attention is drawn to the completed items, and it's made harder to see unfinished todos (which are of course ways more important than already finished items). That's the reason why I liked the gray items more. But as I also mentioned, grayed out might be interpreted as disabled.
