challenging issue... i've run into this same issue with people using the 
open/save file version of KFD ...

what isn't apparent to most is that you can select a different protocol (and 
perhaps enter a hostname, though i'd guess that would be pretty obvious if 
you're looking at a ftp:// url)... 

perhaps a solution is to to have an editable combobox box next to the 
directory path edit that shows which protocol is being used and which 
contains a list of all other possible protocols? so it would list file, http, 
ftp, fish, etc...
