by default it shows only a spinner. but the spinner/slider combination is a 
common one. you can see it on Windows, MacOS and GNOME, for instance. of 
course, that isn't a reason for keeping it, but it does beg the question, 
which you actually asked: why?

some settings require exact settings, but have a huge breadth of options. for 
instance in the panel, you can customize the size from 24 to 128 pixels. it's 
convenient to use a slider, but hard to see the exact value when using one. a 
spinbox allows you to see the value as well as fine tune it if necessary, but 
it isn't very convenient to "move" it around.

so in the case of an option with a large number of individual possible 
settings that requires precision in the setting, the slider/spinner combo is 
very useful.
